Leaving the house with a newborn can feel like you're packing for a week-long vacation.

Extra clothes? Definitely.

Three things you probably don't need but are bringing anyway? Also check.

If you're preparing for a newborn photography session, you may be wondering what you actually need to bring with you.

The good news is that you don't need to arrive at your newborn session with your entire nursery packed into the car.

Here's what I recommend bringing—and what you can leave at home.

1. Bring Plenty of Food for Baby

Whether your baby is breastfed, bottle-fed, or combination-fed, plan for feeding during your newborn session.

Newborn sessions are baby-led, and babies aren't particularly concerned about whether their feeding schedule fits into our photography plans.

If you're breastfeeding, we'll take breaks whenever your baby needs to nurse.

If you're bottle-feeding, bring enough formula or breast milk for the time you'll be away from home, plus a little extra.

Even if your baby just ate before leaving home, don't be surprised if they want to eat again.

A full tummy can often help a newborn relax and settle back into the session.

Most importantly, you never need to apologize because your baby needs to eat.

Feeding breaks are part of newborn photography.

2. Pack Your Normal Diaper Bag

You don't need a special photography-session diaper bag.

Bring the things you would normally pack when leaving home with your newborn:

• Diapers

• Wipes

• Feeding supplies

• Burp cloths

• An extra outfit

• Any other everyday essentials your baby regularly needs

Newborn accidents happen.

Actually, during newborn photography, they're practically expected.

If your baby spits up, has a diaper blowout, or somehow manages to create a mess immediately after being changed, don't worry.

We've seen it before.

3. Bring a Pacifier If Baby Uses One

If your baby takes a pacifier, bring it with you.

For newborn family portraits, I generally recommend keeping clothing simple, light, and neutral.

Soft creams, whites, beige, muted earth tones, and other understated colors photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your family and your newborn.

Avoid large logos, bold graphics, extremely busy patterns, or anything that will compete with your baby for attention.

You don't necessarily need everyone to match.

Coordinating is usually much more natural than matching perfectly.

The goal is to create photographs that still feel timeless years from now.

5. Bring Clothing for Siblings

If siblings will be included in the session, keep their clothing simple too.

Neutral colors and soft textures tend to photograph beautifully with newborns.

The most important things walking through my studio door are you and your baby.

Everything else is secondary.

If I had a dollar for every new parent who told me this before their newborn session, I could probably retire.

Okay, maybe not retire—but I hear it all the time.

Parents arrive at my Savannah newborn photography studio worried that their baby will be the one baby who refuses to sleep. Or cries. Or wants to eat the entire session. Or poops through everything.

Here's what I want you to know:

Your baby does not have to sleep perfectly for us to create beautiful newborn photographs.

We stop and figure it out.

What Does “Baby-Led Newborn Photography” Mean?

Baby-led means exactly what it sounds like:

Baby sets the pace.

I have a plan when you arrive at the studio, but your newborn hasn't seen my plan—and they generally aren't particularly interested in following it.

And that's okay.

If baby needs to eat, we pause.

If baby needs to be changed, we pause.

If baby needs cuddles, they get cuddles.

If a particular pose isn't comfortable for your baby, we don't force it.

What If My Baby Wants to Eat the Entire Time?

This happens too.

Newborn babies have tiny stomachs, and feeding patterns can be unpredictable—especially during growth spurts.

You don't need to worry that stopping to feed your baby is “using up” the session.

Should I Keep My Baby Awake Before Newborn Photos?

Parents sometimes hear that they should keep their newborn awake for hours before a photography session so the baby will sleep once they arrive.

Please don't stress yourself—or your baby—trying to manufacture the perfect sleepy newborn.

An overtired baby isn't necessarily a sleepy baby.

Sometimes an overtired newborn has a harder time settling.

Follow the preparation information you're given before your session, but don't panic if your baby sleeps in the car, takes an unexpected nap, or completely ignores the schedule you hoped they would follow.

Newborns are remarkably good at ruining plans.

Thankfully, I expect them to.

What If My Baby Won’t Do a Certain Pose?

Then we move on.

Not every newborn will comfortably do every newborn pose.

Babies have different levels of flexibility, different preferences, and different temperaments.

Newborn safety should always be more important than recreating a particular photograph.

If your baby shows signs that a position isn't comfortable, I will adjust the pose or move to something else.

There are plenty of beautiful ways to photograph your baby.

Will We Still Get Enough Photos?

This is another concern I hear from parents when their baby isn't sleeping.

A session can feel very different from the finished gallery.

Parents see the feeding breaks, diaper changes, soothing, wrapping, and repositioning happening in real time.

I see the tiny moments we're creating between all of those things.

It only takes a fraction of a second to capture a photograph.

What If My Baby Pees or Poops During the Session?

Welcome to newborn photography.

It happens.

A lot.

Newborn photographers are very familiar with bodily fluids.

Please don't be embarrassed if your baby has an accident during the session. We clean everything up and continue.

You are definitely not the first parent whose baby has peed, pooped, spit up, or somehow managed to do all three during newborn photos.

What Can Parents Do to Help?

The best thing you can bring to your newborn session is not a perfectly scheduled baby.

It's patience.

Try not to put pressure on yourself or your newborn to perform.

Babies can sometimes take a little time to settle into a new environment.

Give them that time.

You don't need to know how to make your baby pose.

That's my job.
