Baby Pennywise- Savannah Newborn Photographer
We All Float: A Pennywise Photoshoot in Savannah, Georgia
Savannah, Georgia is known for its Spanish moss, historic architecture, beautiful squares, and Southern charm—but every once in a while, I like to trade timeless and pretty for something a little darker.
And this Pennywise photoshoot was definitely darker.
As a photographer in Savannah, Georgia, I spend most of my time photographing newborns, maternity sessions, families, children, and milestones. But photography has always been about more than simply taking a beautiful picture for me. I love creating an entire scene, telling a story, and bringing an idea to life.
This time, that idea involved a red balloon, a terrifying clown, and a little inspiration from IT.
Creating a Pennywise-Inspired Photoshoot
Halloween and horror-inspired sessions give me the opportunity to step completely outside of my normal work. Instead of soft, timeless portraits, the goal was to create something that felt cinematic, eerie, dramatic, and just uncomfortable enough to make you look twice.
Pennywise is such an iconic horror character because so much of the fear comes from the atmosphere surrounding him. The red balloon. The smile. The shadows. That feeling that something isn't quite right.
That was exactly what I wanted to capture.
Rather than simply photographing someone dressed as Pennywise, I wanted the finished images to feel like stills pulled from a horror movie.
Every detail—from posing and expression to lighting, composition, and editing—was used to build the final story.
A Different Side of Photography in Savannah, GA
One of my favorite things about being a photographer in Savannah is how much creative inspiration exists here.
Savannah already has a reputation for being one of the most beautiful—and famously haunted—cities in the South. Between the massive oak trees, Spanish moss, historic buildings, old cemeteries, cobblestone streets, and centuries of stories, Savannah can shift from romantic to downright eerie with the right perspective.
It makes Savannah, Georgia an incredible backdrop for creative and conceptual photography.
While Emily Moncus Photography is best known for maternity, newborn, family, milestone, and portrait photography, projects like this Pennywise photoshoot give me the chance to create simply for the sake of creating.
And sometimes, it's fun to make something a little weird.
Or creepy.
Okay... really creepy.
From Beautiful Portraits to Horror
There is actually more crossover between traditional portrait photography and a horror-inspired photoshoot than you might think.
Lighting still matters.
Posing still matters.
Expression matters even more.
But instead of trying to create warmth, connection, or softness, you're intentionally using those same tools to create tension.
A slight tilt of the head can completely change the mood. Shadows that I might normally soften can become part of the story. An expression that would never make the cut during a traditional portrait session might be exactly what makes a horror portrait work.
And when you add Pennywise into the equation?
Well...
We all float down here.
Creative Photography in Savannah, Georgia
After more than a decade behind the camera, one of the things I still love most about photography is that there is always something new to create.
Some days that means photographing a brand-new baby curled perfectly into a newborn pose.
Some days it's documenting a growing family beneath the oak trees in Savannah.
Some days it's creating timeless maternity portraits in the studio.
And apparently, some days it means hanging out with Pennywise.
Photography doesn't always have to fit neatly into one category. Personal projects and creative photoshoots keep me inspired, challenge me to see light differently, and give me an opportunity to create images that are completely unexpected.
This Savannah Pennywise photoshoot was definitely one of those projects.
Creepy? Absolutely.
A little unsettling? Hopefully.
Fun to create?
100%.
And if you happen to see a lone red balloon floating around Savannah...
Maybe just keep walking.
